David Ogilvy quotes: my Magna Carta of Advertisement

1. A good advertisement is one which sells the product without drawing attention to itself.
2. Advertising is only evil when it advertises evil things.
3. Advertising people who ignore research are as dangerous as generals who ignore decodes of enemy signals.
4. Advertising reflects the mores of society, but it does not influence them.
5. Develop your eccentricities while you are young. That way, when you get old, people won't think you're going gaga.
6. Every advertisement should be thought of as a contribution to the complex symbol which is the brand image.
7. First, make yourself a reputation for being a creative genius. Second, surround yourself with partners who are better than you are. Third, leave them to go get on with it.
8. Good copy can't be written with tongue in cheek, written just for a living. You've got to believe in the product.
9. I don't know the rules of grammar. If you're trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language.
10. I have a theory that the best ads come from personal experience. Some of the good ones I have done have really come out of the real experience of my life, and somehow this has come over as true and valid and persuasive.
11. I notice increasing reluctance on the part of marketing executives to use judgment; they are coming to rely too much on research, and they use it as a drunkard uses a lamp post for support, rather than for illumination.
12. If each of us hires people smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs.
13. If it doesn't sell, it isn't creative.
14. In the modern world of business, it is useless to be a creative, original thinker unless you can also sell what you create.
15. It takes a big idea to attract the attention of consumers and get them to buy your product. Unless your advertising contains a big idea, it will pass like a ship in the night. I doubt if more than one campaign in a hundred contains a big idea.
16. Leaders grasp nettles.
17. Never stop testing, and your advertising will never stop improving.
18. Ninety-nine percent of advertising doesn't sell much of anything.
19. On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.
20. The advertisers who believe in the selling power of jingles have never had to sell anything.
21. The best ideas come as jokes. Make your thinking as funny as possible.
22. The consumer isn't a moron; she is your wife.
23. What you say in advertising is more important than how you say it.

David Ogilvy

More about books on art that I enjoy

I'm studying economics, business strategy and marketing, so it's clear that I'm an art-amateur. So the books I'm looking for are not those for the experts, but for the art-lovers.

While the difficulty of choice in the fiction department is often caused by the variety of choice, getting a book on art can often be difficult because of the not systematized way of publishing. Unfortunately this mistake is sometimes being done in editions for amateurs. The fact is that you can not publish a book on Renaissance without saying what Medieval Times were like and it's impossible to print a book on Lalique jewelry without explaining the main ideas of Art Nouveau and why it was over so quickly. Unfortunately, some experts forget about these introductions and conclusions, which makes reading almost useless if you are not experienced enough in world history and history of art.

That's why the main goal of my visits to bookshops and amazon.com is to find a book that would not only tell me about a certain master or period of history, but would also provide me with an opportunity of using this information as a reference book. This is the most important criterion for me and books like that can be found more frequently abroad than in Russia. I'm going to tell you more about them.

Delacroix, Gros, Gericault, Ingres, David..... I never have enough time in Louvre, last month I visited the grands formats twice.

A big painting is a big story: those that make you step backwards to appreciate their greatness are of a particular interest to me. The most outstanding painting in Salle 34 is, with no doubt, La Mort de Sardanapale, 1827, by Eugene Delecroix.

A great story by Lord Byron leaves me alone with my imagination

My Dad lives in Nyon («Noviodunum» - le centre urbain de la Colonia Iulia Equestris fondée vers 45 av. J.-C. pour accueillir des vétérans de l'armée de Jules César), a small town not far away from Geneve. It's famous for being founded by Cesar and as a location of the UEFA headquaters.
Nyon is situated in canton de Vaud that has at least a dozen of marvellous castles, that make my heart leap.

My passion for castles appeared in Austria, where I first visited an outstanding renaissance schloss Rosenburg, furbished in Spanish style thanks to the Goyos family that owns the castle since the end of the 17th century.
I enjoy visiting castles because they cover broadly several fields at a time: history, archtecture, applied and fine arts, culture, customs and traditions, mode de vie........

As for canton de Vaud, I have only visited Chateau de Chillon so far, and what is of a special value for me is that it is completely furbished and has a rich collection of antique furniture and weapons. Now I would like to choose another one for my next visit to Switzerland this week.

Here are my personal Top 5 Castles between Lac Leman et Lac de Neuchatel:

1)

One of my most favourite towns in the world is Etretat, the true heart of Normandy. I discovered it thanks to my Dad, son of a sailor, a great traveller in love with the sea. I was sixteen then, and this cosy little town impressed me so much, that I decided for sure to buy a house in Etretat by the age of 60 and spend the end of my life there)

Later, I found out, that my beloved impressionists share this passion for Etretat! Claude Monet, Eugene Bodin, Gustave Courbet came to Etretat to paint its gorgeous cliffs and maybe even have a bowl of moules au creme avec des frites just like there admires do now!

Etretat is a source of inspiration for different generations: here and there you can find young talents as well as retired ladies and gentlemen standing on the hills in front of their easels and looking into the distance peacefully..

Paintings of Jacques Louis David are known all over the world and I do love them, but they were something like common knowledge for me. However, yestarday I visited Les Grands Formats salle in Louvre and was more than impressed by his Madame Recamier! Why haven't I seen it before?

This painting has an outstanding force, everythings seems attractive and seducing in it - a beautiful young woman with an exigent attitude, gâtée et capricieuse and a perfect couch by Jacob-Desmalter........

They say, Madame Recamier was only at 28 sittings, after which she had a stormy quarrel with the Master and never came again. That's why the portrait remained unfinished.

There 228 photos form Hendrik Berinson's collection were presented.

There's something very special about his photos - Weegee worked for police and was always the first one to take photos of corpses, buildings on fire, homeless kids and drunk beggars - nevertheless, his works are most often full of humour and wittiness. They are never tragic, they don't depress you, quite the contrary: the give an inspiration.
I just couldn't take my eyes off them, especially the gangster series!

A period of "seeing again" my favourite pieces of art, finally. The fact of having already seen an exhibition elsewhere makes me extremely happy now - It's a real joy to have an opportunity to learn more facts and notice new details about the same pieces of art.
I saw Weegee's works in my favourite Gary Tatintsian, INC gallery for the first time and I guess, that's where my opinion about the contemporary art was formed.

Villa Savoye - wondereful, gorgeous!

Why can’t I be non-original?

I never read, I just look at pictures.

The artificial fascinates me, the bright and shiny.

I guess, I’ve been influenced by everybody. But that’s good. That’s pop.

Do you know that Campbell’s Soup Co. has not sent me a single can of soup?

If somebody faked my art, I couldn’t identify it.

I think that’s the best thing in life: keeping busy.

I was never embarrassed about asking someone, literally, “what should I paint?” Because Pop comes from outside, and how is asking someone for ideas any different from looking for them in the magazines?

I think, every painting should be the same size and the same color so they’re all interchangeable and nobody thinks they have a better painting or a worse painting.

I don’t think less is more. More is better. Big paintings cost more than little paintings, and magazines pay by word.

I like painting on the square because you don’t have to decide whether it should be longer-longer or shorter-shorter or longer-shorter: it’s just a square.

I only slept two-three hours a night from ’65 to ’67, but I used to see people who hadn’t slept for days and they’d say things like “I’m hitting my ninth day and it’s glorious!”

Silver makes everything disappear.

I’m the type who’d like to sit home and watch every party that I’m invited to on a monitor in my bedroom.

I have Social disease. I have to go out every night.

Everyone is rich. Everyone and everything is interesting.

I love it when you ask actors “what’re you doing now?” And they say “I’m between roles”. To be living “life between roles” that’s my favourite.
